Navigating Local Customs
To ensure a harmonious and enriching visit, familiarize yourself with these key local customs and courtesies in Dubai and the Maldives.
Ramadan Observance
If traveling during Ramadan, be mindful of fasting hours. Avoid eating, drinking, and smoking in public spaces during the day as a sign of respect. Many restaurants adjust their operating hours.
Public Conduct
Maintain respectful public behavior; loud arguments or excessive public displays of affection are generally frowned upon. Always address individuals with courtesy.
Religious Sites
When visiting mosques or other religious sites, dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered). Women may be required to cover their hair. Remove shoes before entering designated prayer areas.
Tipping Etiquette
While not mandatory, tipping is appreciated for good service. For restaurant staff, 10-15% is common. For hotel porters, drivers, and guides, a small amount (5-20 AED) or (1.36 - 5.45 USD) is customary. 1 USD is Equivalent to 3.67 AED
Essential Dubai Travel Tips
Clothing Guidelines
Loose-fitting cotton clothing works best in Dubai's sunny climate. Bring hats for daytime heat protection and light layers for heavily air-conditioned indoor spaces. Winter evenings can be surprisingly cool. Dress modestly in public areas with long skirts or trousers and covered shoulders, especially when venturing beyond resort areas. Crossbody is helpful to carry small items.
Mosque Dress Code
When visiting mosques like the Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, appropriate attire is mandatory for entry. Women should cover their hair, arms, and legs completely. Men must wear long trousers and shirts with sleeves. Traditional abayas and kanduras are available for purchase in local markets or can be provided at mosque entrances.
Currency & Bartering
The UAE Dirham (AED) is the local currency, widely accepted everywhere. Credit cards are accepted at most establishments. Bartering is expected and encouraged in traditional souks—start at 40-50% of the asking price.
Fixed-price stores and malls do not negotiate. Keep small bills for tipping and taxi rides.
Currency Information
Understanding the local currency and payment methods will ensure a smooth and hassle-free experience in both Dubai and the Maldives. Use the XE.com app to determine price value. Convert Locations: You can convert USD at your bank before you leave, the hotel, ATM or the money houses (usually cheaper), airport conversion fees tend to be a bit higher.
Dubai: Emirati Dirham (AED)
1 USD is Equivalent to 3.67 AED
The official currency is the UAE Dirham (AED), which is pegged to the US Dollar. Major credit and debit cards are widely accepted across hotels, shops, and restaurants. AMEX is NOT widely accepted.
  • ATMs are readily available for cash withdrawals.
  • Carry some small cash denominations for taxis and traditional souks. Some merchants only accept AED or credit card. Best to barter with their money.
Maldives: USD & MVR
1 USD is Equivalent to 15.40 MVR
While the local currency is Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR), US Dollars (USD) are universally accepted, especially in resorts. Credit cards are also widely used.
  • Resorts often operate on a cashless system; all charges are billed to your room.
  • No need to exchange large amounts of MVR unless exploring local islands.
How much money should I take?
That is subjective to what you spend. Example $500 USD is worth $1836.25 AED. I suggest converting $300 USD and use your USD where possible. Newer style USD bills not torn or worn or written on. Merchants won't accept worn old bills.
it is almost always better to choose the local currency (AED) when using your credit card in the UAE (or anywhere abroad) instead of USD, because the merchant's exchange rate (Dynamic Currency Conversion or DCC) is usually worse than the rate your bank provides, saving you money. Always select the local currency option to let your card issuer handle the conversion for better rates and to avoid hidden markups.
What to do:
  1. Look for the prompt: When using your card, the machine will ask to charge in AED or USD.
  1. Select AED (Local Currency): Always choose the local currency.
  1. Confirm your card: Use a credit card with no foreign transaction fees for the best results.

Luggage Weight Limits
Understanding baggage allowances for your flights with Emirates and Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA) is crucial for a smooth journey. Avoid unexpected fees by familiarizing yourself with these guidelines.
Emirates Airlines (International)
For your international flights to and from Dubai, Emirates typically offers:
  • Checked Baggage: Usually 20-35 kg (44-77 lbs) per passenger, depending on your fare class and route. Always check your specific ticket for the exact allowance.
  • Carry-on Baggage: Generally 7 kg (15 lbs) for Economy Class, with Business and First Class allowing two pieces up to 7 kg each.
Excess baggage fees can be substantial, so it's wise to pack mindfully.
Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA)
Your transfer to the Jawakara Islands will be via seaplane with TMA, which has stricter limits due to aircraft size:
  • Checked Baggage: Typically 20-25 kg (44-55 lbs) per passenger.
  • Carry-on Baggage: Limited to 5 kg (11 lbs) per passenger.
Any excess baggage will incur additional charges, which are often paid directly at the TMA counter before boarding. Space is also subject to availability.
Understanding Local Culture
Embrace the rich heritage of the UAE. A little insight into local customs ensures a more respectful and enriching travel experience in Dubai.
Dress Code
Opt for modest attire in public spaces, especially for women, covering shoulders and knees. This shows respect for local traditions and religious beliefs. Especially in the Mosques. Men can not wear shorts their legs must be covered. Men in Dubai traditionally wear the Kandura (also called Dishdasha), a long, white, ankle-length robe, paired with a Ghutra (headscarf) held by an Agal (black cord).
Greetings & Gestures
A polite handshake is common. Avoid excessive public displays of affection. When accepting items or eating, always use your right hand.
Dining Etiquette
Wait to be seated and use your right hand for eating. It's polite to accept offers of tea or coffee, and avoid pointing the soles of your feet at others.
Photography & Privacy
Always ask for permission before photographing people, especially women. Respect privacy and avoid taking pictures of government buildings or military sites.
